Can I just sneak him around the store, or am I missing places that would let me bring my baby (besides the obvious Petsmart/PetCo)?
I've taken my babies to stores even to restaurant. Here's a good guideline to follow: If the store has signs posted saying no dogs allowed keep the carrier closed while you are there. Obviously you have to do that in restaurants too. Any place that has perishable foods, will not allow dogs in unless they are service dogs...ie grocery stores so if you keep the carrier closed they will never know. If it's a dog friendly store, feel free to have the carrier open while you are shopping. I've never had a problem going into pet stores(obviously), WalMart, and craft stores like Michaels or fabric stores with the carrier open.
Most times people don't realize you have your baby with you. If you notice, kids are more observant and will point out your baby before an adult will.

And too, it helps if your baby likes to be in carriers and don't whine or bark.
