A good start would be if the puppy weighed not more than a pound and a half at 8 weeks or 2 1/2 pounds at 12 weeks. This should give you a dog about 5 pounds at maturity. Take a kitchen scale with you (available at Target, Walmart for about $10.00). It's important to look at the parents, but it's also important to know the size of the grandparents, great grandparents, etc.

Find someone who has bred the same two parents before and contact the owners of the previous litters. This should give you a good idea.
