I generally use a lot of layers of towels during the whelp since the mamas need to dig and they are absorbent, but remove them and leave just the pish pad after we're done. There is no chance of the mama burying pups in blankets or towels since the bottom layer 'sticks' to the whelping box and it is absorbent and clean.
