All I can say is that Millie was over 6 1/2 - 7 months old before she reliably asked to be taken out and she basically just stares at us and yips. But before that I would not rely on her to tell me. I just kept up the potty routine and made her go out, whether she wanted to/needed to or not. So at 16 wks, your puppy is still pretty young and it may take awhile before he will ask to go out on his own. At this age you are just trying to develope a preference and a habit of going out. Once the "preference" has been established, they will not go in the house, because they don't want to go in the house and they will start asking to go out.
So you need to maintain your diligence in keeping a watchful eye on him, keep him on a schedule and try to eliminate or minimize errors so that he establishes the good habit of only peeing outside. |
