Thanks for all your responses. I contacted the company, and the person who replied said a harness is fine. She said, "We prefer clients use a flat leash as it is easier to handle and there is no chance of the cord of the flexi becoming tangled or harming your hands." I will look for a cheap leash at PetSmart or another store.
