If your dog is a puppy and you're seeing round worms in the stools or vomit - most likely they're roundworms and you can buy over the counter wormers. I use the active ingredient pyrantal pamoate, a liquid wormer. If you are seeing pieces of things that look like flat grains of rice, it is probably segments of a tapeworm. You can buy a wormer for tapeworms which is usually just one pill, but not as effective as what the vet can prescribe.
Follow the directions carefully and do some research to self-diagnose which worms you are dealing with - hookworms you will never see in the stools.
