I have just had a very close look at it, and saw that it was a dry largish scab that seems stuck to his hair, so I bathed it in warm water very gently and it has come off, the skin underneth is clean, totally healed and a healthy pink colour.
He is FINE after all. Thank you for your reply, it inspired me to have another look.
