Yorkie hurting... Since I got up today, I noticed my Yorkie was acting funny. When I went to give him a bath, I noticed he was sitting in a strange position with his tummy on the bed but he back legs and bottom up slightly. After I gave him his bath, instead of being crazy and running around (he hates the water), he just laid on a spot on the couch. Then, I noticed that every five seconds or so his whole little body, more so in his hind legs, would shake. He also was giving me a grunty whimper when I picked him up. So, I took him to a local retired vet. who looked at his legs and said that by the way he was walking (hind legs stiff, reluctant to move) that he thought he was having joint problems with possible calcium build-up related to his femoral osteotomy (he had it when he was one year, he's five now). I knew he was going to be more prone to hip and joint problems... but, I didn't think it would be so soon. I also didn't think it would be so sudden. I noticed this evening that his little joints pop (they've done it twice in about twelve hours, but they didn't do it before). He is still eating and drinking; using the bathroom regularly. He is not into playing and is having difficulty going from sitting to standing and he will not even attempt to jump or go up or down stairs. The vet. gave him a few vitamin shots, an antibiotic, and a bottle of Corta-Flx. He also gave me a hot therapy pad to rub over his back and joints. So, I've given him all that and he isn't shaking anymore. His eyes are still bright and he looks like he wants to play and move, but he just can't. He's in distress and so am I. I'm a mess as I just got him from his previous owner in January and I've not dealt with a pet being hurt/ill before. I can't sleep or eat 'cause I know my little guy is hurt. I am afraid he fell out of the bed last night... he did walk/fall out of the bed on Wednesday night when the electricity was out and he could not see... but, I don't know why it would affect him now. I'm sleeping in the floor with him tonight since he can't get on the bed and I don't want him to jump or try to get off. I'm about to set my clock to wake me up every hour to check on him. I know it probably is just his joints... but, I am thinking about taking him to an current vet. on Monday if he doesn't improve. I am going to schedule an appointment for a check-up definitely. Anyone know anything I can do to help him out besides the vet.? Should I definitely take him to an animal hospital for further evaluation, such as labs and x-rays? Well, thanks so much for putting up with my late night worrying! -Whitney |
