I used play-pens but each puppy had their own. I didn't have any problems. ...(thank-goodness) I went to garage sales and bought them up pretty inexpensively. I did throw something over the top...so they couldn't climb out.
I bought one of those plastic play-yards for kids and pets at toys-r-us. Mine climbed right out...didn't work out very good.
