Confused Playpens for puppies

I have been wondering about getting a playpen the next time I breed one of my girls. Have any of you done that? Lady only had one this time and so I see no need to get a playpen yet. I was thinking is it worth it to buy a brand new one? It would have no smells, stains and, hopefully, no holes in it. With only one pup if I was planning on selling her a playpen wouldn't be a good investment even if it was used. Autumn should be heat again in time to have pups for Christmas(not ready to leave). If she should have 5, then I think a playpen would be a good investment, especially timewise. Because Lacijo should come in heat a second time shortly after that. (Not sure because she hasn't come in heat the first time yet.) I would get one of those play yards for the puppies but I don't have the space inside for one of them. For those of you who do have a playpen, how do you prepare the inside of the playpen for your babies? I have read that someone keeps a bed at one end and newspaper at the other. Thanks Sylvia.
