I contacted the vet at the Purina Animal Food Company - and he said that dogs certainly CAN eat cat food.
My two previous dogs ate cat food for more than 10 years and were never sick - and they were very healthy..... (mainly Meow Mix with the usual table scrabs and treats that most of us feed our dogs)
There are a couple things to keep in mind though --
Cat food is richer than dog food - so any dog that has a weight problem should not be eating a lot of cat food. It is more fattening than dog food.
The vet did also said - cats should not live on dog food. There are things in cat food that they need - and these things are not found in dog food.
*** So - there is certainly no reason why your dog(s) can't have cat food - and especially occasionally.
