That being said, children can be taught how to handle them properly. I have 5 children and 2 (soon to be 3!) yorkies... and 6 babies. |
The problem a breeder would have is that it is hard to discern if the new owner with children would be responsible with their children and the Yorkie and from what Lacy also described, it worked out for her with children because you both took that time and understood the dangers with children and Yorkies.
Many people with small children that approach me about a puppy don't understand the responsibility of being sure that Yorkie pup isn't going to get hurt. Also many times, young people or couples will buy a Yorkie pup then when the first child comes along, they find they just cannot cope with a Yorkie and a new baby. Before anyone gets upset, yes there are exceptions but as a breeder how am I to know who can and who won't be able to handle a new baby, new role of motherhood and a Yorkie that was the baby of the family and now no one has time for the dog?
Last summer I helped a couple place a 6 year old sweet yorkie boy because the wife could not cope with the dog and a new baby. I am now in the process of trying to find homes for two much older dogs because the family is all too busy now that the kids are into school and sports and dogs are home most of the time alone. None of these YOrkies were bought from me, they found me somehow to see if I could help which i am doing.
I have sold twice to people whose youngest child was about 8 years old, younger than I usually will sell to. But the homes were great, children well behaved and minded the parents, not whinny brats.
One gal I sold to, married a few years after buying a couple of my dogs, now have two kids under 5 years old but very dog savvy and the kids are taught to mind and mind the dogs. These are not tiny Yorkies either which helps.
As a breeder, when I have a pet puppy for sale, I really prefer people over 40 kids are teenagers on their way out the door and the owner either works from home or their spouse has different work shifts so the Yorkie isn't alone that much.
I will say yes there are exceptions that work out, but darn it is hard to figure out which ones.
