As for the vet seeing the shunt I think it depends on the size of it and the location but Im not sure.
I just called the emergency vet clinic and was told that the kind of stones Remmy had have nothing to do with livershunts. However we don't know what kind of stones he has now until they are removed and sent to the lab for examination.
