Potter,
I wouldn't worry about the stools not being consistent, as long as it is not diarrhea. Scooting is not a sign of worms (old wive's tale), but it is a sign of anal glands needing to be expressed. Usually, these are expressed with hard bowel movements, maybe when the bowel movements are softer they are not being expressed, therefore the scooting occurs.

I would continue feeding the recommended amount.
