I don't blame you at all for being protective. That is just our nature, especially, after they've been hurt or sick. I would try to let him start out on his own. It will be natural for him to try. He will want to try. You might even hold him around his tummy and walk him a number of times a day if you aren't already. Knowing you, you are probably already doing this.
