I'm afraid the answer is, "however active he wants to be."

I have a one-year-old little guy that is the most laid-back dog in the world. Of course, he plays his little heart when it's time to play, but he's not a barker and loves to lie around, take naps, and chew on his favorite toys. Seems like evenings are the times he wants to play-play-play.

Then - there is a little 5-year-old Yorkie a few houses away from me that is a nonstop terror on wheels. He has never settled down. His owner is always telling me that she would sure like to trade dogs.

So - the end result is that there is no steadfast rule - dogs are just different.
