More than 8 hours is a long time -- I would expect an occasional accident.

I leave my puppy in a large kitchen/laundry room area - for 6 to 7 hours four days a week. He quickly stopped going to the bathroom in there when he was left alone. But - he certainly isn't that good around the rest of the house.

When I'm home, if I take my dog outside every couple of hours - we almost never have an accident - but if I don't - he'll pee wherever he wants.

So - I put a bellyband on him in the evenings when he is running all over - and I still take it off and take him out every couple hours. But - if I forget - the bellyband at least helps protect my carpets, etc.

Potty training these dogs is a pain in the butt. I am sure that if I had a fenced in yard and a doggy door - I'd have no problems at all. But I don't, so a lot of his getting outside and not peeing in the house is totally my responsibility and not his. Darn!
