Two reasons, one for me, one for Eddie:

I would be devastated if I ever lost him. I wanted to have a second to help me get through the grief should that ever happen.

What tipped the scale was when our live-in dogsitter moved out (a good thing). I wanted Eddie to have company for the 5 hours he's alone most days. So really, Jack is Eddie's dog.
