When you see the term "meal" it means it has been dried and ground. So if you see chicken meal it is the chicken (no byproducts) and since it has been dried it is lighter than say if they had listed chicken which would be wet and therefore weigh more so they could put it higher in the list of ingredients. So in short what you are getting is "concentrated" meat without the moisture so you should give it more "points" when evaluating dog food.
