I don't add water. I just use the shower head. Abbie doesn't mind but Max "huddles" in the corner of the tub near the warm water coming out of the faucet. I'm not sure if he's cold, though... I know that he doesn't like being wet so that could be the issue. He doesn't take a long time to bathe, so it's not too traumatic for him (or at least it doesn't seem to be)
