A normal heat lasts approx. 21 days, but could be longer, from the onset of bleeding. The first stage is the red blood. The second stage is when the blood turns to a straw colored and this is when mating usually takes place. The third stage the male will still be interested, but the female will growl at him.

Just keep them separated and have the female spayed before the next heat, if you are not wanting to breed.
