I understand how you are feeling.
My two guys passed away within a year of each other (Spock was 13...Sept. 2004 and Bumpy was 16...August 2005). It was very difficult for both my husband and me so we weren't sure if we wanted to get another to give our hearts to. I was very sad at losing both of them even though they lived long, for the most part, healthy lives.
You will know when the time is right.
Within a few months I started looking online at petfinder, thinking that I would not look for a puppy and adopt an older dog. I saw Sean in February and fell in love with him right away. The adoption process was thorough but didn't take too long.
For me...the right timing. He will never "replace" Bumpy and Spock. They each had/have different personalities.
