I dont have carpet, but I do put something down to protect the wood floors. I bought a large pan that is meant for a kennel - it's good because it's made of plastic and easy to wipe clean, plus, it has a small lip on all sides so nothing will run off the edges. GORJESS also had a good idea - she is using a shower curtain laid down on the floor to protect her carpets. You could get a cheap clear shower curtain liner and cut it to the size you want.
