Being in california, I know that you have hawks and other large predator birds overhead as well as coyotes on the ground. The combination of these two would make it very dangerous to leave a small dog of any kind outside unsupervised for any length of time. I'm not sure what temp extremes you experience in San Jose, but Yorkies don't tolerate heat or cold well. Cold doesn't have to be extreme - temps in the low 60s can cause shivering quickly, too. Yorkies have only a single coat of fur (unlike any other breed) and that makes them temperature sensitive.
Many Yorkies are left at home when mommies and daddies work. Xpens, crates, smaller rooms all work well for their space. If you do get Yorkie, please plan on an inside area for him/her.

P.S. Glad you had the courage to ask this question. When you don't know the answer, no question is dumb!!
