I never leave my dogs outside for more than 5 minutes. There are many reasons for this: they can dig holes and get out, birds & cats can get them. There are fleas outside and mosquitos and its also really hot outside here in Texas. My mother in law lost her Maltese a few weeks ago becasue it got our of the yard.
It is best to get some sort of crate to leave your dog in while you are at work or get a dog pen or section off an area and puppy proof it.
