You could also put your children(if you have any) or you and your husband(if you have one) in the a couple of the pictures. A friend of mine had their pictures taken with their dog when they were little and it has always hung in there stairway.
I think professional pictures come out great. My aunts have always done it, though I must say we always thought they were crazy, now I understand. Plus she didn't have kids so those were truely her kids.
I don't know if anyone watched it but on the Osbornes how they had all those pics of their pets going up the stairs was gorgeous.
