I wouldn't even care about the occasional confusion with the bath matt...but we travel A LOT and he confused a dog bed (one of those crate flat ones) at someone's house with a pee pad. I decided that he needed to learn to "ask" to go and I would either bring him to the outside or into the bathroom. My trainer did say that she found with little dogs that there was more success with litter box being able to tell the difference and not having as many accidents.
Who knows? My breeder has dogs that can tell the difference between washable pee pads and places they aren't supposed to go and she has dogs who can't.
Whatever works for your dog. :-)
