I called a vet that is walking distance ( I don't have a car, remember we are living in a hotel for a month for dh's job) and have an appointment this afternoon...

Does this sound like it is more then stress. I really don't want to go to the vet if I don't have to, but I am starting to worry.
I would take him to the vet if he's in walking distance. Better to be safe than sorry. Did you call them to see what they think? Let them know you're from out of town, and if they think this could be an emergency that you will bring him in, but if they think it can be resolved with some bland food and TLC, that you can nurse him back to health. The mucous worries me always, because that's a sign of an infection I think
