Wow, that is very strange
Was the tree in your yard or in a neighbors yard? If it was a neighbors maybe you could ask them if they sprayed there tree with something. If they did At least then you would have some kind of info to tell the vet. Good luck hun, and I hope he is all better. Keep us posted.
