Dear Brittany,
Often smaller dogs, especially the so-called "Teacups" are prone to low levels of blood sugar which can lead to convulsions, coma and death especially after long periods of play or exercise. To help avoid this problem they should be fed frequently (some suggest every four hours) and be given a supplement like Nutri-Cal. I only give it to my Biewer Yorkie. He is 4.5 pounds and still a pup. He eats a very healthy diet so I'll probably discontinue using it when he reaches his adult weight at about seven months. Mostly, it's a precaution. I hope that answers your question. I'm sure there are others here that are more knowledgeable than I about this subject.
All the best,
