I also recommend combing with the conditioner in. I would also up combing him twice a day (if you are currently doing once a day) with spray on conditioner. Also you could tray using a thinning rake. This will basically cut out the mats as you comb him. It will also thin down his coat; however, using one of these won't allow you to grow his coat long. And by no means should you use this everyday.
