Perhaps it's the crate that he's objecting to? What if you shut him in a bathroom or laundry room (whichever is further from your bedroom)? Cover it in newspaper to make for easier cleanup. Then, put a fan in your room & turn it on high to drown him out and ignore him.

If you must go with adversives, please try one of the things that makes a noise when he barks or a spray collar. I'd really hate to see you use a shock collar (especially on a dog who apparently has already been abused).
