Well, I suppose you could try the easy thing and see if he will poop on a pad placed in his favorite spot.
Otherwise, I think Erin is right - it's back to puppy kindergarten.
One thing to try is pick up a piece of his feces with a clean pad, discard the poop, then lay the pad down where it is supposed to be. That may help him figure out that this is the appropriate poop spot.
