I sure wouldn't wait a week to let them dry up and fall off on their own. They can work their way into his skin especially if he's scratching at them. Just use a little pair of scissors and just cut off the bare minimum. Debbie has gotten some big burrs on her and I've had to use the scissors. You couldn't even tell after they'd been removed.
