It's called dooking for apples in scotland, you can also put the apples in the water and get people to drop a fork out of their mouth in to the water to see if they can get an apple.
Good idea for your punch bowl get some clear polythene gloves fill the with water tie up the ends ,freeze it makes great hand shaped icecubes to put in your bowl!
