The American Horse Protection Act (H.R. 503). On September 7th, the House overwhelmingly supported the bill, passing it with a vote of 263 to 146.
This bill is intended to give protection to America's horses by banning the transport, sale and slaughter of horses for human consumption. As you may be aware, over 90,000 horses were slaughtered in the US last year and thousands more were shipped to Mexico and Canada for slaughter in those countries. The horse slaughter industry in the US exists only to fill the demand from international markets, as horsemeat is not typically eaten in the US.
