I use different color rickrack from the fabric store. I get some tiny safety pins to fasten the rickrack on like a collar for the tiny ones. Then use pliers to permanently squeeze the safety pins closed so that they can't come open. This way when mom is moving them around, cleaning them, pups are playing, whatever, the safety pins can't come open. Then when the rickrack gets dirty, or when I need to change it because they've outgrown it and it needs to be replaced, I just snip it off with scissors and cut another length off of the roll of rickrack and start with another strand and another safety pin that will be smashed shut. I used red, yellow, blue, green, and purple for my last litter. Really cheap, stays on really well, stays pretty clean, lasts for a while (around a week).
