I used a dog litter box for whelping and after. Hubby drilled holds on the bottom of all 4 corners so, I could pull the fleece/lambswool pads through and pin in place to prevent digging. Once puppies started to climb out I removed it and put in large crate pad for mom and babies. They were in a doggie play pen that was lined on with washable piddle pads and covered on all sides and half the top.
