Angry Cat in pond was in weighted carrier

I just read this article in Newday this morning....how can people be so cruel...I hope they find this person.

A dead cat in a weighted carrier was discovered in an East Hampton pond in what police say may be an act of animal cruelty.

The black, short-haired female cat was found about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday and may have been in Town Pond for several days, said East Hampton Village police Det. Sgt. Margaret Dunn. Inside the carrier were several rocks.

"What a horrible act of cruelty," said Chief Roy Gross of the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. "We take this quite seriously."

The county agency is working with the police department to find the owner of the cat and the person responsible for its death.

The cat was taken to East Hampton Veterinary Group, where a necropsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.

If the cat was alive when it was thrown into the pond, Gross said, the person responsible could be charged with felony animal abuse, which carries a 2-year jail term and up to a $5,000 fine.

Anyone with information is asked to call the police department at 631-324-1026 or Suffolk SPCA at 631-382-7722.

Gross said that throughout his years with the agency, he has noticed a surge in abandoned pets when the summer population leaves the East End, which is usually after Labor Day. However, no statistics are available.

"If you have an animal you don't want, bring it to an animal shelter and give it a chance for adoption," he said.
