my comet had the same exact symptoms when I just got him and was in fact treated for ear mites. The vet used a 1 time drop solution that cleared it up in a day or two. Shaking the head and scratching the ears w/brown smelly discharge could be a range of different types of ear infections. Fungus, yeast, mites.... Your vet will be able to pinpoint what type of ear infection it is an treat it appropriately. You should have in checked asap. Good Luck
