Chewie is 7 months old and I work all day. I come home from work everyday at lunch to let him out. This is when I usually walk him, a 20 minute walk at lunch, he pee's 100's of times which seems to help him hold it. I crate trained him in the beginning but because he holds it now I just leave him in our laundry room. I felt guilty leaving him all day long when I was at work so we just got our second puppy - Pete. They play all day long and it's much more fun for Chewie. I don't feel like they can hold it for a full work day, especially if you consider your commute time on top of 9 hours so if you can't come home I think you are doing the right thing with giving him a place to go - on the paper. Don't stress about the house training - he will be trained if you are consistent and continue to work on it.
