My boyfriend smashed his finger under a 300 lb pipe at work once. It was pretty nasty - his finger looked like a cartoon where the finger was all huge & red & throbbing! But it was exactly like you described. It call all black & hard & eventually the nail fell off completely. It grew back & it looks normal now. Don't worry you'll be able to give the thumbs up sign without grossing people out soon enough!!
