My dog comes to a variety of names.
I'd just start using the new name in with the old name and slowly phase out the old one.
I think its just your voice that makes them perk up and pay attention anyway.

Just tested my Jake with the new name "farty bum" and he responded .... but maybe that because he just ..... ahhh never mind
