I'd shoot for two ex-pens. I initially bought one, then went back for two more. Took one and split them up to use as a gate so she doesn't run upstairs or have an entire run of the house. Very useful and very easy to travel with as they are collapsable and lightweight. you can always put the 2nd one in a diff. room if they sleep somewhere else rather than drag the ex pen all over the house. What we do is have one set up as an ex-pen for use while we're working and another one to give her space in the entire dining area so she can run around while we're home but not under supervision and the third to cover up the stairs.
