I don't like crate training -- I hate the idea of leaving them in crates all day.

I never used a crate and successfully trained 3 dogs (1 Maltese and 2 Yorkies). What worked for me was using an exercise pen. Put the pen in one room (preferably without carpet). Then put food, water, toys and a small bed on one side and on the other side put her wee wee pads.

You can get x-pens for a great price on E-Bay! Just last week, I bought an exersice pen and had it mailed to my in-laws home so that when we leave Saturday for our visit, we will have something to put the dogs in while we're out (rather then give them free run of the house).

I got it for a great price too -- $47.98. Here's the one I bought:
