When dh and I got married, I already had 3 kids from a previous marriage. He had a black lab/border collie mix that was 13 at the time. She bit me the first time I met her. She's not mean, just old and grouchy. I was nervous to have her around my kids. She eventually made friends with my oldest and he can pet and love on her all the time. We all can, but he's the closest to her. She's now 16. When we had our first child together, I was really nervous about how she would be with a baby. Because she had been the only dog and had all of our constant attention. When the baby was born, she merely sniffed it out and went about her way. It didn't seem to affect her at all! Now that he is 2, he's getting to where he's wanting to pet her, but she runs from him. He knows that he can't go up to her. It's a matter of teaching boundaries and respect.
