Hi John,
what works for me is a squirt bottle with water in it, when Lillie is mis-behaving I squirt her and say "No" in a stern voice and this has really worked, she hates water so this training works for her.

Since you can't seem to get him in the crate, I suggest a ex-pen, it's like a crate but more open and not so inclosed, my baby sleeps in her's, it's big enough for her bed, food, water, and a wee-wee pad.
