You won't lose them. It's not so easy to find other daycare that they will be happy with. I owned a center for several years, and one thing I found out, people don't like to make changes in child care...it's too late to do anything about this week, but if you want it to stop, draw up new contracts and point out that if payment in advance is not received, you WILL NOT provide care until it is. If you dont, you can expect this behaviour to continue.
The more you let them take advantage, the more they will.
For example, I charged $1/minute after 5:35 if children had not been picked up. Once, I had a mother who I knew was struggling for $, so I let her slide, once, twice, three times...finally one day she didn't show up until 7:30

. Mind you, this wasn't my home, this was a center. Both a staff person and myself had to stay with this child until someone arrived. (Pa requires a minimum of 2 staff at any center even if only 1 child is in attendance) I tried all the emergency contacts and got nowhere. I was getting ready to call child services when the mom pulled in and raced up to the door all apologetic. I charged her. It came to $115. Would you believe, she wrote me a check and left. (the check was good). Her child continued at my center for 3 more years, but was never picked up late again. And I never waived the fee for anyone again.
I think you said that your in D.C. There are a lot of people who need care. Take the risk, and take care of yourself.
