I know the situation isn't funny but I can see him standing there with the "Mommy, what do I do now" look on his face!!
Perhaps you could go to a home improvement store like Lowe's or Home Depot and buy a square of grass (I'm not sure if they let you buy just one) and leave it in the corner of the fence?
