It could be food allergies in that case you will probably have to switch him to a form of protein he hasn't been exposed to like duck, sometimes just getting a food with no corn is enough. I really doubt food allergies would start that fast and that intense.

It could also be some type of skin problem like mange (mites) or an allergic reaction to flea bites that will need to be treated by a vet. Mange is something all dogs have, but a poor immune system or stressful situation can cause it to get out of control.

It could be a contact allergy so an oatmeal based shampoo might provide some relief. You can also buy the aveeno oatmeal bath treatments they use for chicken pox and that should temporarily provide some relief. Benadryl may also provide relief. Since is just started so suddenly, look for something new he has been exposed to - new plant, new floor cleaner, new detergent on his bed, carpet freshener, etc.
